For cues - specify inlay and complex styling, weight (ounces) and size of shaft, plus any other relevant specifics. A good quality cue, if taken care of properly, will last a long time.

If you've been using a house cue, try out some good cues and see the difference having the right cue - your own cue - can make to your game in terms of dramatic improvements. Get a good cue, watch good players and training videos, and practice, practice, practice (and then practice some more!!).
